Resume photos, done right

The most popular part of our seminar. Japanese resume photos have rules — and fashion roles bend them a little.

Standard resume photo

  • Mouth closed, corners turned up
  • A refined smile, not a grin
  • No smile / stiff expression
  • Residence-card-style ID photo

Applying to fashion brands

  • Add a more natural, smiling photo beyond the formal one
  • Include a full-body shot
  • Something you’d post on Instagram works
  • What they want to see is that you love dressing up

Interview tips

How you speak

  • Bright, clear, energetic — speak a little louder than usual
  • Sit up straight and keep still
  • Say “hai” (yes) just once. Repeating it (“hai hai hai”) reads as dismissive in Japanese, even though repetition feels natural in Chinese.

What to prepare

  • Prepare answers to common questions (we provide samples)
  • Research the brand thoroughly
  • Check the website and Instagram — visit a store if you can
